Although the Tampa Bay Rays‘ lease doesn’t end until 2027, they may be breaking their current lease with the Tropicana Field and arriving in Hillsborough County during the 2014 holiday season. The City of St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay Rays seem to be much closer to an agreement that permits the team to search areas in Hillsborough to determine the best sites for the new stadium.
If the Tampa Bay Rays breaks their lease with the Tropicana Field, the City of St. Petersburg will be compensated. However, at this point while executives are in talks about the agreement, the team is not allowed, contractually, to seek other stadium sites before 2028, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
